John Hyden oldest athlete to ever win AVP title
Hyden/Doherty win AVP Gold Series in Chicago
Only one week after winning the FIVB World Tour Finals in Hamburg (Germany), Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena (USA) just played another important final. This time they were facing their American colleagues Doherty/Hyden in the AVP Gold Series Championships 2017 in Chicago. Unlike a few weeks ago when facing each other at the FIVB World Championships in Vienna, this time Doherty/Hyden were the ones to take the win, turning John Hyden (44) into the oldest athlete to ever win an AVP title.

In an exciting match, this final showcased am amazing fight between Dalhausser and Doherty battling at the net. While Doherty/Hyden who had been unbeaten throughout the tournament played at their highest level, Dalhausser/Lucena presented themselves quite experimental. Unlike in the weeks before when Dalhausser had done full time blocking, this time they split blocking. This strategy did indeed bring them to the final but no further since at the net only Dalhausser could keep up with Doherty. In the end Doherty/Hyden were way more consistent and won in two sets (21:19, 21:19).
The Chicago event was the last one of the 2017 AVP season. With a packed stadium it was a great closing of the year with a positive outlook on 2018. Find more information on the AVP tour here.

Yeah true. And I find it quite motivating that you obviously can do sports at professional level in your mid-40’s, ahm mid-30’s 😉
