AVP champions Hyden and Doherty split up
2017 AVP Gold Series champions John Hyden and Ryan Doherty will go separate ways in the next season. Based on a post on Ryan Doherty’s facebook page, John Hyden is going to team up with Theo Brunner leaving Doherty behind without partner.

AVP win in Chicago was Doherty’s only major tour victory
Just a few weeks ago, Hyden/Doherty had beaten Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena in the final of the AVP Gold Series Championships in Chicago, turning John Hyden (44) into the oldest player to ever win an AVP title.
Hyden/Doherty had also played several events on the FIVB tour, taking fourth at the Fort Lauderdale Major and winning silver at the Olsztyn Four Star. The AVP win in Chicago this September was Doherty’s only victory on the AVP tour. With his former partners Casey Patterson, Todd Rogers, Nick Lucena and John Mayer, former pro baseball player and full-time blocker Doherty wasn’t able to win a major tour event.
Doherty was replacement for Hyden’s former partner Tri Bourne
John Hyden had played with Christian McCaw, Sean Scott and Nick Lucena before he teamed up with Tri Bourne in October 2013. After Bourne’s announcement to miss the 2017 season due to an injury, Hyden joined forces with Doherty.
Brunner, Hyden’s new partner, had previously played together with Casey Patterson, taking third at the AVP Huntington Beach Open and Manhattan Beach Open. It does not look as if Patterson and Doherty will be joining forces again. However, there have been no announcements yet as to who Patterson and Doherty are going to team up with in 2018.
That’s a shame to see, but given their performance in the last season it isn’t terribly surprising. While there haven’t been any announcements yet, do you have any speculation on who they might be considering teaming up with?
I mean they won the AVP Gold Series in Chicago against Dalhausser/Lucena which is not that bad. In terms of a new partner for Doherty, everything seems to be open…
