In the first CEV event of the year, 2013 world champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen (Netherlands) won the gold medal at the CEV European Masters at Pelhrimov (Czech Republic). In another tight match they beat Kantor/Losiak from Poland in the final (24:22, 22:20) to take the gold medal. Both teams had already had a successful start in the year with a bronze and a silver medal at the FIVB 4-star indoor event at The Hague just a week ago. The bronze medal went to last week’s winners Plavins/Tocs (Latvia). After playing several close matches throughout the CEV indoor tournament, Brouwer/Meussen were satisified after their first win of the year:
“We had a disappointing last year, results weren’t like we wanted to. But now we made a new start, going in a new direction and this proved for us that we are going in the right way.”
In the women’s competition, Czech Republic’s Kristyna Kolocova and Michala Kvapilová won the final against Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka (Latvia). After a straight first set, the Czech girls only had to fight in the second set (21:8, 23:21). The bronze medal went to Lahti/Parkkinen from Finland who won the bronze medal match against German team Ittlinger/Behrens.
