Third consecutive win in one month for Artacho/Clancy
With their third consecutive win in a major tournament this October, Mariafe Artacho Del Solar/Taliqua Clancy (Australia) have shown a successful performance at the AVC Beach Volleyball Tour Palembang Open in Indonesia. In the final, the Australians beat Kazakhstan’s Tatyana Mashkova/Bakhtygul Samalikova in two straight sets (21:14, 21:18).
Having won the Osaka Open in Japan and the FIVB World Tour event at Qinzhou in China earlier this month, Artacho/Clancy have been the dominating women’s team in the last few weeks. The Australians, who just recently joined forces and are still in a trial partnership, have in total won 16 straight matches and 32 sets with zero losses. Both were happy about a win that wasn’t as easy as the result sounds. Clancy admits:
“It got a bit close there in the end but we came together as a team, got the serving back in our game and brought the hustle again and we got the win…It really did just click for us. I feel like we share common goals.”
In the men’s competition, Cherif Samba Younousse/Ahmed Tijan Janko from Qatar won the title destroying the local crowd’s hopes of an Indonesian victory. In the gold medal match the Qataris beat Candra Rachmawan/Mohammad Ashfiya (Indonesia) 21:17 and 21:16.
The four-day event ran as a test for next year’s 18th Asian Games, which will be co-hosted by Palembang and Jakarta, Indonesia. Participating teams came from15 countries including host Indonesia, Australia, Japan, Iran, Qatar and Thailand.
