Russia and Australia win FIVB World Tour titles in China
Russian and Australian teams have taken the titles at the 3-star FIVB World Tour event in Qinzhou (China).
Three-set thriller brings first title for Sivolap/Velichko
In the men’s competiton, Maxim Sivolap/Igor Velichko (Russia) won the first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour title of their careers. In windy conditions and a very close three-set final they beat Mexico’s Juan Virgen/Lombardo Ontiveros 19:21, 21:19 and 20:18. In the decisive tie-break, the Mexicans beat off six match points, but the Russians succeeded converting the seventh. Igor Velichko:
“This gold medal gives us a lot of confidence and points, now we can start to practice again and get ready for the next year.”
Earlier today, Cubans Nadir Diaz Gomez Nivaldo and Bayard Sergio Reynaldo Gonzalez had beaten top seeds Koelkoren/van Walle (Belgium) in three sets to win the bronze medal.
Artacho/Clancy crush Polish surprise team in 28 minutes
In the women’s competition, Australians Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy crushed Kinga Kolosinska and Katarzyna Kociolek from Poland in two straight sets and only 28 minutes. Just as their male counterparts from Russia, they also claimed their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour title. Taliqua Clancy:
“It has been enjoyable, every game and every match to play, so getting the benefit of winning this is absolutely extra bonus.”
Their opponents, 30th seeds Kolosinska/Kociolek, could celebrate their silver medal as well. They had surprised the crowd with big and unexpected wins over highly rated US teams Claes/April Ross and Sweat/Summer Ross. Sweat/Summer Ross took home the bronze medal beating Chinese top seeds Wang Fan/Xia Xinyi in the bronze medal match.
