Germany’s Borger/Sude claim Qinzhou title against Walsh/Sweat
In the race for the Olympic qualification for Tokyo 2020, Germany’s Karla Borger and Julia Sude won gold at the FIVB 3-star in Qinzhou (China). In the final they took down Americans Kerri Walsh and Brooke Sweat in straight sets. After dominating the first set, the Germans had to come back from 16:18 in the second. Strong side-out and increased service pressure finally brought the second set, the gold medal and 600 points in the Olympic qualification process (21:16, 21:19).
In the four previous matches, Borger/ Sude had beaten four Chinese pairs. The Chinese showed a strong team performance as an overall team. In the semifinals, the Germans beat newcomers Wen Shuhui and Wang Jingzhe who claimed bronze. In the second semifinal, Walsh/ Sweat had a huge comeback to defeat Australian top team Mariafe Artacho/ Taliqua Clancy in three sets (17:12, 21:18, 15:12).
In the men’s final, top-seeded Swiss team Heidrich/Gerson defeated number-two seeds Ermacora/ Pristauz from Austria in straight sets (21:13, 21:16).
