Top teams make it into round of 16 at Jinjiang 4-star
At the FIVB 4-star at Jinjiang (China), it was mots of the top teams who went straight through to the round of 16.
Itapema winners Anders Mol and Christian Sorum, Xiamen champions Oleg Stoyanovskiy/Viacheslav Krasilnikov (Russia), Herrera/Gavira (Spain) and Brazilians Alison/Alvaro Filho as well as Evandro/Bruno posted two consecutive wins to directly advance to the round of 16. They will be joined by three US teams who had to go through an additional elimination round after losing in pool play. While John Hyden and Ryan Doherty beat Pedro Solberg and Vitor Felipe in two sets, Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser had a hard time to defeat Surin/Adisorn from Thailand in the tie-break (18:21, 21:14, 15:13). They will be joined by Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb who posted a win against Durant/Schumann (Australia) to advance to the last 16. Tri and Trevor will face Alison/Alvaro Filho tomorrow morning. Nick and Phil will play against Pedlow/Schachter (Canada) while John Hyden and Ryan Doherty will have a tough match against the Norwegian Vikings who won last season’s Gstaad and Vienna Majors as well as the World Tour Finals.
In the women’s competition, Brazilian top teams Agatha/Duda, Xiamen and The Hague winners Ana Patricia/Rebecca and Maria Antonelli/Carol advanced to the elimination round with two wins in pool play. US teams Summer Ross and Sara Hughes and Kerri Walsh Jennings and Brooke Sweat were also successful in their pools. Czech beach girls Hermannova/Slukova, Australians Clancy/Artacho and US team Claes/Sponcil who beat compatriots Flint/Day had to play an additional round to advance to round of 16. Reigning Olympic and world champion Laura Ludwig and her new partner Margareta Kozuch also advanced to the last 16 after beating Japanese team Megumi Murakami and Miki Ishii in three sets (19:21, 21:18, 15:13). With Talita/Taiana and Barbara/Fernanda it will be in total five Brazilian teams in the women’s round of 16.
