The men’s competition at the FIVB 4-star at Itapema saw a disappointed home crowd and strong US teams. While no Brazilian team has been left after the round of 16, three US teams made it into the quarterfinals. After Chase Budinger/Casey Patterson and Reid Priddy/Theo Brunner had beaten teams from Switzerland and Canada, Hawaiians Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb beat 2013 world champions Brouwer/Meeuwsen from the Netherlands in three sets (20:22, 21:15, 15:8). All three teams will face European teams in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Bourne/Crabb and Budinger/Patterson will face Polish top teams Fijalek/Bryl and Kantor/Losiak. Priddy/Brunner will need a strong performance against last season’s newcomers Anders Mol and Christian Sorum from Norway. The young Vikings had won the Gstaad and Vienna Majors as well as the World Tour Finals in 2018.
In the women’s competition, Brazil, Canada and the US managed to advance two teams to the quarterfinals each. “A-Team” Klineman/Ross beat American compatriots Summer Ross/Hughes in the round of 16 and will play World Tour Final winners Agatha/Duda (Brazil) on Saturday. Three-time Olympic champion Kerri Walsh Jennings and Brooke Sweat will face Canadian top team Pavan/Humana-Paredes. The second Canadian team in the quarterfinals are Brandie Wilkerson and Heather Bansley who beat Brazil’s Barabara/Fernanda in the round of 16. They will face Russians Nadezda Markroguzova/Svetlana Kholomina. In the fourth quarterfinal Brazilians Taiana Lima/Talita will play Dutch team Stubbe/Van Iersel.
