German block party continues today – USA vs. Russia in three episodes
Day 8 of the FIVB World Championships starts with the women’s quarterfinals. In an all-Amercan encounter A-Team Klineman/Ross will play compatriots Summer/Hughes for a spot in the semifinals. Brazilians Barbara/Fernanda as the only South American team left in the competition will face Hüberli/Betschart from Switzerland who beat Ana Patricia/Rebecca yesterday. The other highly rated Brazilian women’s team Agatha/Duda was knocked-out by Russian surprise team Makroguzova/ Kholomina who will play Aussies Artacho/Clancy in the quarterfinals. Canadians Pavan/Huaman-Paredes will go up against Italians Menegatti/Orsi Toth.
The men’s side will see three showdowns between the USA and Russia. In the round of 16, Gibb/ Crabb will play Russian top team Krasilnikov/Stoyanovskiy at 1.45pm. At 3pm Bourne/Crabb will face Semenov/Leshukov who eliminated Kantor/Losiak from Poland. And at 6pm Dalhausser/Lucena will go up against 2017 bronze medalist Nikita Liamin and his new partner Taras Myskiv who knocked out Vienna silver medalists Doppler/Horst from Austria. Surprise team Slick/Allen who upset Brazilian top team Evandro/Bruno will play Italians Lupo/Nicolai.
The last German team in the competition Thole/Wickler will face reigning Olympic champion Alison and his partner Alvaro Filho in a must-see match on center court tonight. All other remaining host country teams were eliminated yestreday. The youngsters held the German hopes high in a spectacular battle against 2013 world champions Brouwer/Meeuwsen from the Netherlands. In the first set, Julius Thole performed a blocking hattrick against the Dutch to produce a 15:10 lead for the Germans. He continued his block party in the second set to come up with a total of 13 blocks and to guarantee the German two-set win (23:21, 21:19).
