As assumed in our Gstaad event preview, the first Major event of the season proves to come at a wrong time for the top teams. In the early stages of the Gstaad Major, several top teams are either out or facing elimination.
New world champions Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy from Russia lost in pool play to Brazil’s Alison/ Alvaro Filho in the tie-break. They had the chance to recover in the “loser’s” round of 24 this afternoon but lost to another Brazilian team. Against Guto/ Saymon the new world champs lost a close two-set match which knocked them out of the competition (21:23, 19:21). Other successful teams from last week have also been eliminated. Hamburg semifinalists Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb didn’t even make it out of pool play after losing to Canadians Saxton/O’Gorman and Austria’s Doppler/ Horst. Same story for Italians Adrian Carambula and Enrico Rossi who finished 5th in last week’s world championships. They are out after being defeated by Guto/Saymon (Brazil) and Pedlow/ Schachter (Canada).
On the women’s side, silver medalists Alix Klineman and April Ross lost their second match to Liliana/ Elsa from Spain in two straight sets (15:21, 11:21). They have another opportunity to move along to the knock-out stage in tomorrow’s round of 24. Olympic champion Laura Ludwig and her partner Maggie Kozuch experienced another disappointing knock-out when losing both their matches to young Russians Makroguzova/ Kholomina and Brazilians Ana Patricia/ Rebecca.
