After Huntington Beach and Austin, the third stop of this year’s AVP Tour will be New York City which hosts an AVP event for the fifth time in a row. The event is part of the AVP Gold Series which comes up with an elevated prize money of US$300,000. The 2019 Gold Series NYC Open will see 16 teams in the main draw for both men and women. Ten teams are automatically seeded, two receive wild cards and come through qualification. The qualifiers start on June 6, main draw will be played from June 7-9.
Since the FIVB World Tour is taking a break this weekend, the NYC entry list is the “who-is-who” of US beach volleyball. Not only are the top teams competing such as Jake Gibb/Taylor Crabb, Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena or the women’s “A-Team” April Ross and Alix Klineman. But there will also be some new teams in the sand who have never played together before. Everybody knows that Kerri Walsh Jennings is not participating in AVP events for obvious reasons. Therefore her current partner Brooke Sweat is teaming up with Canadian beach volleyball gypsy Brandie Wilkerson who is holding a triple citizenship. Since one of those is US citizenship, Brandie can compete on the AVP tour. Brandie about Brooke:
“I could have never imagined the honour of partnering up with a US Olympian and an absolute superstar.”
