The Manhattan Beach Open are the most important event of the AVP Tour. Being part of the Gold Series, players are competing for a total of US$300,000 in prize money. The 32-team main draw starts Friday with the semifinals and finals being played on Sunday in front of a packed stadium. 14 teams per gender come in as auto entries, 10 as wild cards and 8 come through the qualification.
Due to the Olympic qualification process being at full pace, several US top teams are missing the event. Kelley Larsen/ Emily Stockman, Kelly Claes/ Sarah Sponcil and Brooke Sweat/ Kerri Walsh Jennings are all playing the FIVB 4-star event in Moscow. Same is true for Jake Gibb/ Taylor Crabb and Billy Allen/ Stafford Slick on the men’s side.
At the same time, some new fascinating partnerships will be emerging at Manhattan Beach this weekend. Indoor Olympic champion Reid Priddy is teaming up with Trevor Crabb whose partner Tri Bourne is still suffering from his broken hand incident at the Vienna Major. On the women’s side, beach volleyball gypsy Brandie Wilkserson who is holding a triple citizenship is partnering with Sara Hughes.
