After a long, very long break caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the beach volleyball world elite returns to the international stage. At the FIVB World Tour 4-star event in Doha (Qatar), eight of the top 10 women’s and nine of the top 10 men’s teams will be kicking off the Olympic year on their road to the Tokyo Games starting in July.
On the men’s side, reigning FIVB world champions Viacheslav Krasilnikov/Oleg Stoyanovskiy of Russia are leading the pack. In absence of the No. 1-ranked men’s team on the World Tour, Norwegian Beachvolley Vikings Mol/Sorum, the Russian world champs are followed by Hamburg silver medalists Thole / Wickler of Germany and Brazil’s Alison Cerutti/Alvaro Filho. Defending champions are Michal Bryl/Grzegorz Fijalek of Poland. For the US, beach volleyball oldies Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena are competing alongside Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb. Casey Patterson / Chase Budinger and Chaim Schalk / Theo Brunner will start in the qualifiers after securing a spot in the US country-quota matches.
On the women’s side, Canadian world champions Melissa Humana-Paredes/Sarah Pavan are the top entries followed by American A-Team Alix Klineman and April Ross as well as Agatha/ Duda of Brazil.
The 4-star Doha event will be kicked off with the qualifiers on March 8. Main draw starts on March 9, medal matches are being played on March 12. You can find further details on the official FIVB event page.
