World champs and US teams with great start in Doha
It was a good start into 2020 for the US teams at the FIVB 4-star in Doha (Qatar). Three American top teams won their pools and directly advanced to the round of 16. Beach volleyball veterans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena posted two straight wins against Bouter/Penninga (Netherlands) and Ermacora/Pristauz (Austria). Just as their compatriots, Chetumal winners Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb did also not drop a set by beating Gaxiola/Rubia of Mexico and Pedlow/Schachter of Canada. After their first gold medal as a team in the early season, Gibb and Crabb are up for more…
It was slightly tougher for Hamburg semifinalists Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb, Taylor’s brother. After defeating France’s Aye/Gauthier-Rat in two, the Hawaiian boys needed to go through an intense three-setter to beat Ukrainian team Popov/Gordieiev (20:22, 25:23, 16:14). Only the fourth US team Billy Allen and Stafford Slick lost their match to Brazilian top team Evandro and Bruno Schmidt. Since the US boys had beaten Thole/Winter of Germany before, they will play in the round of 24 tomorrow.
The tournament’s favorites are reigning world champions Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Viacheslav Krasilnikov who started with a two-set victory over Qatar’s Benlouaer Ziad and Saifeddine El Majid. In their second match, the Russians took down Latvians Aleksandrs “Lion King” Samoilovs and Janis Smedins in three. Further teams who topped their pools are Dutch world champions Brouwer/Meeuwsen (Netherlands), Polish top team Fijalek/Bryl, Evandro/Bruno Schmidt and Germany’s Ehlers/Flüggen. The elimination round will be played tomorrow, the quarterfinals on Thursday and the medal matches on Friday. The matches can be livestreamed at the FIVB Youtube channel.
