Brazilians Evandro/ Andre Loyola win World Championship
The Austrian dream was alive until the very last match of the tournament. Then Evandro/Andre Loyola from Brazil stopped the self-proclaimed Austrian underdogs Doppler/Horst in the gold medal match.
In an intense and close game it became clear from the very beginning that this is going to be a big boys’ game. Evandro and Horst served a row of aces setting the scene from the start. Although Alex Horst was suffering from a bee sting in the first set, the Austrians managed to get 4 set points when leading 20:16. This is when Evandro entered the stage serving three service winners in a row with speeds of up to 99 km per hour. The Brazilians turned the tables and won the first set 23:21.
In the second set the Austrian game was weakened by quite some service errors bringing Brazil in front. The Brazilians only served Clemens Doppler who consistently fired his shots into the Brazilian court. At 16:14 the Brazilians requested a video challenge for assumed block touch by Austria which was rejected for no obvious reason. They lost traction and Austria could equalize to 19:19. With some great attacks and a big block Andre Loyola became the match winner in the end with the second set, match and the World Championship going to Brazil (22:20).
Although it was a tough loss for Austria, Doppler/Horst didn’t lose gold but win silver. This silver medal is the highlight of their career so far. “It was the week of our life”, said Doppler immediately after the game. Their incredible perfomance has definitely won them new fans all over the world and has pushed beach volleyball in Austria to whole a new level.
