Brazilian teams reign FIVB World Tour Event in Rio
Two Brazilian teams won last weekend’s FIVB World Tour event in Rio de Janeiro. The event taking place at the Olympic Tennis Centre was dominated by Brazil in the men’s as well as in the women’s competition.
The Olympic champions from Rio 2016 Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt defeated Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak (Poland) in the men’s gold medal match at the US$ 300,000 Rio Open tournament with a 2-0 (25-23, 21-12) win. In the bronze medal match, the Italian team Lupo/ Nicolai beat 13th-seeded Brunner/ Patterson (USA) 2-1 (21-15, 24-26, 15-11).
In the women’s competition Agatha/ Duda (Brazil) won the tournament with Canadian team Pavan/Humana-Paredes ranking 2nd place and Czech team Hermannova/Slukova finishing 3rd.
German Olympic gold medal winners from Rio 2016 Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst were eliminated in the quarter-finals and ended up on 5th rank.
Highlighting the 2017 international Beach Volleyball calendar will be the $1-million FIVB World Championships July 28 – August 6 in Vienna (Austria) and the $800,000 FIVB World Tour Finals August 23-27 in Hamburg (Germany).

Brazilian teams rule in beach volley matches! It is good to know, though, that Italian and Czech teams were at the medals. Sorry about the German champions but that’s the beauty of sports; you do not know who is gonna win! 🙂
Best wishes,
Rebecca!
Very true, Rebecca! Especially in their own country it is really hard to beat the Brazilians. Good that there are a couple of events in Europe coming up 🙂
I had no idea Brazil was this good at volley. Thought it was all about football. Guess I ain’t informed. Thanks
Yes, like football, beach volleyball is the nation’s passion and Brazilians have been dominating the international beach volleyball scene for years.
