It was for the first time that indoor Olympian Reid Priddy teamed up with Trevor Crabb whose partner Tri Bourne is still suffering from his broken hand incident at the Vienna Major. And the new duo claimed the iconic AVP Manhattan Beach title right away. On “Super Sunday” they needed to go through three matches and they took down the three top-seeded teams in impressive fashion. Coming through the contenders bracket, they first beat Bomgren/Field to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals they didn’t leave any questions open against top-seeds and seven-time Manhattan Beach champions Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena (21:12, 23:21). And in the final, they defeated number-2 seeds Patterson/Budinger (21:15, 21:19). The title earns them a spot in the AVP Hawaii event in September. Volleyball veteran Reid Priddy:
“I am grateful. I can’t believe we did it… We made a commitment to be very aggressive in any situation and that’s what we did.”
On the women’s side, Hamburg world champions Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Parades claimed the first ever Canadian win at Manhattan Beach. Being only the second foreign team to claim the title, the Canadians defeated the top-seeded A-Team Alix Klineman and April Ross in an epic three-set final (28:26, 16:21, 16:14). In the semifinal they had beaten Cannon/Reeves in two sets. In the other semifinal, the A-Team had defeated beach volleyball gypsy Brandie Wilkserson and Sara Hughes who had just teamed up for the Manhattan Beach event.
